Hi everyone!

Welcome to the Paediatric Society at Brighton and Sussex Medical School’s (BSMS) website! I am excited and honoured to be undertaking the role of President for this amazing society this year, having been on the committee in numerous other roles during my years here.

The Paediatric Society is one of the most active societies at BSMS. Our aim is to ensure there are many opportunities available for students to get involved, participate, and find out more about this unique speciality and what makes it so special. We host a variety of events throughout the year with many chances to explore paediatrics, whilst allowing us to raise money for our amazing charities. We also assist our year 4 and 5 students with paediatric revision sessions in collaboration with the AMECS society.

We are extremely grateful for our generous sponsorship since our establishment and this has enabled the society to provide educational and networking opportunities which support the student curriculum. Throughout the year, we spend a lot of time fundraising for our chosen charities; Rockinghorse Foundation, Chestnut Tree House and Amaze. We also take part in National Paediatric Fundraising Week during which we will host events in support of our local charities and take part in a national fundraising effort for Young Minds.

This year will be the 12th year of us hosting the National Student Paediatric Conference (NSPC) which we have proudly hosted since 2012, followed by an evening ball. We have lots of exciting things planned this year and some great speakers which I think you will enjoy tremendously and give you a great insight into the world of Paediatrics. Please check out our 'Conference' page for more information. For those who cannot attend the conference we also host educational lectures on a wide range of paediatric topics from incredible doctors around the UK throughout the year.

Our participation in the Europe-wide initiative ‘Teddy Bear Hospital’ aims to prevent and combat “white coat syndrome” in young children and has been enthusiastically received by local primary schools in the last few years. Each year we have a fantastic amount of student volunteers delivering interactive sessions including raising awareness of asthma and allergy amongst children, inspired by the charitable work of Haydn’s Wish. Three years ago, we expanded our scheme to include students in Year 6, with the same aim of combatting “white coat syndrome”, which involved using our medical equipment, demonstrating the cardiovascular system and learning history taking. This year these will be run by our incredible teddy bear hospital rep Rajvir Sran.

We are also hoping to finally get our very own Fun Team up and running that will allow our students to interact and play with inpatients at The Alex. Stay tuned for more updates on this!

For more information about our events or how to get involved with us, explore our website, follow us on social media, or contact the committee directly via email.
